You already got some of the most important building pieces in your head, and it just comes down to sometimes working your way backwards to how your characters will reach that point, and then working back to it. While I a maximum optimism enjoyer, I also appreciate and can find myself immersed in stories that have darker and more depressing tones. The most important thing when giving your own story life is to not get hung up on how readers think the story should end, but what is true to your own vision and satisfaction. If you write for yourself, you truly can't lose.
