People are in love with the community, not the vtuber: memes, art, animation, games. The vtuber is only there to be an icon, a mascot character to inspire fan content. In this aspect Hololive is pretty similar to Touhou, bullet hells are kinda niche but the creativity of its fandom brought a lot of people in.

This is also why Polka is my favorite Holo by the way. She focuses on livestreaming games a lot less than a regular holo, sings a lot more and even does a fair amount of actually good prerecorded content. I feel she is one of the few that isn't carried by her community.
