If you're watching somebody with thousands of viewers, it's more because you want to belong to that viewer community and show off how cool you are to that community and less because you're genuinely invested in the streamer themselves.
This is why larger streamers often have slower chats compared to smaller ones - they have a lot of low-investment fans for whom they are second monitor/background content, but who want to demonstrate that they were present for big moments. Contrarily, in a small stream where fans are more likely to directly interact with the streamer, a higher proportion are active and engaged fans.
