AIs are nowhere near as complex in their information processes as humans, so much like we can infer a lower level of consciousness among less intelligent animals we can infer that if an AI does have conscious experience, it is at a lower level a la non-human animals at best. The only thing that makes them seem more intelligent than they are is the fact they can use human language, but otherwise they are, compared to a human, completely fucking retarded and simply cannot have our level of awareness or they wouldn't be so retarded. It's the same reason you might assume a parrot is very intelligent simply because it has the ability to mimic human speech, but in actuality, many mammals, such as pigs, dolphins and chimps, are more intelligent than parrots, and even among birds, crows have them beat - they just can't talk to us so it's not as obvious.
