The high brass was convinced that because of the US's air superiority that they would decimate the Chinese and North Koreans who had no air force. This turned out to be false: having air superiority would not win the war because they could not bomb their means of production (which was located in China and the USSR), they could not break the will of the people through bombing (peasant society used to hardships), and could not exterminate the population (artificial limited war).
