If I do get caught up in idle chitchat, I'll go along with it but I genuinely don't care about what other people do on their off time so long as it doesn't prevent them from getting shit done at work. Companies that "treat their employees like family" are awful most of the time. "Oh sure, it's optional to go to a corporate event, but management is looking at who goes and they expect you to be there and it'll look bad on us if you don't :)"
