In my experience though, in modern conversation sabot usually refers to the "discarded in 2-4 parts" type you describe, as you say. But yeah, my research lines up with everything you're saying, especially regarding the rifling, that's part of why I was interested in finding a fun weapon design that didn't depend on rifling to function.
