Old Frankish => Old French => Old Norman => Middle English
Old English/Old Norse => Middle English
In all cases there's great separation between the origin and modernity, so they become semantically opaque.
Not so much in Japanese. Most Japanese first and last names are very transparent (like the 田中村 gag), so Japs think names are supposed to be like that even in English.
You can certainly make charactonyms (suggestive names with a transparent meaning) in English but stylistically it's a narrow field to play in: you kinda need to avoid the Ebenezer Scrooges, the Sitting Bulls and the Miss Malaprops.
