Even now there's a bit more complexity than just a static grid of colored letters - see outline around head, different characters for eye and mouth, shirt, coat, etc. Eventually I'll try more intense outlining closer to pic related, it's actually not too bad, mostly just detecting borders between sufficiently-different colors and choosing the right border character based on the surrounding pixels. Maybe we'll do it on stream.
