You don't need to go full /djt/ with 50 words a day, but learning 15-20 of the most common words a day is really rewarding for beginners and is still managable in the long run. A couple of months and you already can kind of understand most basic conversation. Now that's a motivator. When you are just starting you feel results literally every week, slog comes later. On the other hand, If you take a fucking month to learn kana like they do at Japanese courses chances are you will give up on it before long.
