Firing someone who is extremely "valuable" but might "rock the boat" so to speak is something every company is used to.
Like look at Kojima at Konami. Arguably the most influential developer in the company's history and yet they fired him out of the blue because he ignored the corporate mandates from higher up. Respecting the corpo hierarchy will always always outweigh retaining talent. Talent can always be replaced, but questioning the hierarchy is a threat to the corporate aristocracy's continued existence.
