By extension, that means that if you wanted your kid to have way more opportunities, you would teach them Putonghua, not Cantonese. If one gets taught Cantonese anyway instead of the far more valuable alternative, given the time it takes to learn a language, it almost invariably points to a family at least tacitly opposed to China.
