SMT 4 is a modern turn based game that has minimal outdated jank, has good depth and allows for a lot of creativity in playstyles. The Bravely series too, but you might be turned off because the narrative can be hit or miss.
Unless you mean the Xenoblade gameplay in specific, in which case, yes, it fucking sucks
