>>98232418Depends on the "standard semiautomatic pistol," what specific cartridge loading is in it and the thickness of the "fairly dense" book.
Most "private security" personnel would be issued some flavor of 9mm handgun (or if you're one of the few weirdo people who adopted the Five-seveN, 5.7x28, which can penetrate level III plates), unless you're talking about being in Vietnam, Cuba or North Korea (which all would give 7.62x25 Tokarev, which is *extremely* capable of penetrating a book, because it can penetrate level III plates).
However, just about every 9x19 load made since 1940 can penetrate a 1000-page book, especially military loadings with penetrating cores, but "armor piercing handgun ammunition" is banned by law in most countries so "private security" wouldn't have that.
There's a neat Russian FSB protection load that I got a few rounds of years back that can pen level III plates, it's neat but I'm never shooting it.In short, yes. Books are terrible at stopping bullets, that's why we use ceramic plates and spaced steel sheets (in vehicles) to stop bullets, not copies of On War and The Brothers Karamazov.
Hope this helps.
