Part of the reason why Lovecraft's horror is so effective is because he was genuinely frightened of everything due to severe generalized anxiety disorder. He was scared of black people and the ocean and rotting food and space and even goddamn AIR CONDITIONING. Studying how he turned his irrational fears into horror concepts that could scare other people without his mental illnesses is fascinating.
