probably because they want to be the first to try and get attention, and only know tried and true methods of gaining said attention, regardless of whether or not said tried and true methods were dependant on the place and time, or if said attention is positive or negative.
I'm not a psychoanalyst so I'm probably spouting bullshit myself, but from the way i see it, it's either to get attention, or to fit in.
