In case you didn't know theres simultaneously a rental crisis (people can't find places they can afford and a bunch of international owners are making everything into air bnbs), a housing crisis (high mortgage loan rates and high property costs), high living costs (that 7% CPI hit hard), mass layoffs (just had loads of senior managers and directors laid off from my firm but some others are targetting lower level staff instead), and a shit job market (loads of fake job adverts made by companies to try and pretend they're still growing, companies severely underpaying, very few entry level positions).
The recession means that people are forced to steal stuff to make ends meat.
