as opposed to a regular persona, which, while providing a nice front to enjoy for the consumers, isn't supposed to mask anything. say jerma gets raped off stream. you're now watching a rape victim, even if he's not talking about it. simple, no mental gymnastics, jerma is a person, he does a funny for streams but he's a real guy going through real things.
vtubers, of course, are also real people, but the point is that the distinction is made. say haato gets raped. that's actually haato's roommate. haato doesn't exit beyond whatever she posts with the avatar in it. should you connect the two things, that's on you, the source texts already makes the connections between the two when it wants to and anything beyond that is you adding to it, no better than a fanfic. whether making the separation comes naturally or not, or whether part of the thing is or isn't going through with the connections anyway, I will not argue. but it's there, and no other medium relies on it, or maybe breaking it, this much, so I'd say that's what vtubing is.
there's also all the idol shit that the west has trouble understanding for some reason but i think is a big part of the thing but I'm sure the average /vt/ard has this figured out already
