That's why the situation that develops is so absurdly fucked, it's to create a situation where there can be no good ending and the only good way forward is to forget everything that happened. "It is only by forgetting"... etc. etc. And as you can see in pic related, it split /hlgg/ with another question it raises. It's a pretty cool game. Plus the earlygame puzzles are fun.
