If you haven't driven one enough to get comfortable, or driving a manual trans sports car or rock crawler, you may not "get it".
Automatics transmissions have improved a lot over the last 10-15 years, but older autos used to have more problems with them feeling sluggish and shifting at inopportune moments, so having the ability to shift yourself exactly when you wanted to was a faster and better experience.
It's entirely about enjoying the car and taking ownership of the experience. I'll concede that if your only concern is getting from point A -> B, then it doesn't matter.
