There's a horror anthology comic I like called Ice Cream Man and one issue was about exactly that and it was personified as this little green goblin who would invade this guy's memories and when it poked things in his memories they would fade to white and he would forget them. At the end when all he has is the hospital bed he's lying down in the goblin returns and pokes him and the room around him fades and he dies.
