My initial thoughts on schizophrenia is that it could be induced from a strong childhood trauma destroying the consciousness into multiple disconnected fragments that fight each other for control.
In that case it would be like a malformed tulpa and reintegrating it into your personality through communication might work.
The difference may be that for some reason it exists outside of the main consciousness like cancer because it started too early before the ego was born.
