You may have never seen it before but most Japanese people can actually tan to an absolutely extreme degree if given the chance and the sun exposure. I'm Japanese and at my darkest my skin was much darker than a black friend's, and I met a surfer dude once who got so much regular sun he was even darker again, like 34 on the luschan scale. I bet even Marine would get that dark with enough sun. Which isn't to downplay discrimination, skin colour just isn't much of a factor.
Violence too isn't really something to ever have to worry about in Japan in general, its reputation for being a safe country is fairly well-earned.
