They've been away but this is probably the moment where they're realizing they may be able stay in Japan permanently. It's not "I'll go home in a month and see my parents and friends again", it's "It might be 6 months or a year before I can make the flight home and back" and it'll probably be for the holidays. A whole year away from the place they called home? I don't think it's the only factor, but stuff like that is weighing on them on top of all the red tape and the logistics.
