Christianity, which has spread far and wide, has had an anti idol position, but human nature is inherently inclined to idolize. That's why even in Christianity, you have saints, and martyrs, and the mother mary being idolized.
It's no surprise the idol industry originated in Japan, because Japan is notoriously anti-Christian.
As to why idols are so desired, it's borne out of a need of emotional fulfillment. You can't get it from your wife or husband, because they are too down to earth and unmysterious. Likewise, a deity is too intangible. So idols are the outlet. They allow you to do your best in times of hardship, and hold your head high. They inspire and comfort the masses.
