I was heavily involved with the Japanese community in my area and they literally wouldn't shut up about how Japan is so much better. If confronted with cuisine from other cultures that is actually better than theirs, they'd cope with "too much seasoning, needs less/subtlety is key" which is true to some degree, but it was really just a massive cope. Don't get me wrong, I'm fully aware of how much of a shithole the US is, but hearing "You know Japan has 4 seasons! This place isn't the same, Japan is better because it snows!" on a snowy day gets exausting. It's the exact same conversation, every time.
Whenever I'd ask them if they're planning on moving back to Japan to retire, they'd look at me like I had 5 heads. Not a single one of them wants to live there ever again, regardless of political affiliation.
I still want to visit, but I'm going to have high standards when I go there since apparently Japanese cuisine is unmatched in the entire world. Apparently European/East Asian/Latin American cuisine is nothing compared to a bowl of Japanese rice.
