png's are a direct pixel-map format. They also support transparency. A png is the highest quality of image and highly useful. But often the filesize can be too big
A jpg is a compressed format, doesn't support ransparency, and often has distortions in the image caused by the compression algorithm. However the filesize is often much smaller and easier to post.
I'm not sure about .gif honestly, but I know they support animation
