Right after the Shintare duo mission there's a Shintel mission where Shinri gets distracted by his memories of Altare to the point that he will walk straight into traps and other dangerous situations and Bettel has to prevent him from dying to his own stupidity. He keeps making comments how uncharacteristic it is for him to be the straight man and for Shinri to act so foolishly.
During the night, after the two set up their camp, Shinri wanders into the woods to think about his time with Altare again, altering several dangerous monsters of their presence. Shinri gets propelled into a bush, knocking him unconscious. Bettel is not so lucky, as he watches his ronin friend and guild mate thrown into the air and cries out his name, a monster attacks him directly from behind, piercing through his torso, before ripping his entire fucking arm off. The monsters leave soon after but Bettel has no more energy left inside of him. His last word will be calling for Shinri's name, asking him if he is okay before succumbing to his wounds. When Shinri wakes up a few hours later with the worst headache he has ever had, he is greeted by the sight of Phantom crying next to the mangled corpse of his owner, rubbing his paws against Bettel's injuries.
