They're a ton of fun to play, e.g. I replay Zero every year, but I've always thought they were bad stream games (good zatsu games?) because as beautiful as they are, they're just not very visually interesting if you aren't invested in the gameplay and story.
Ace Combat is one of those series where I feel like you probably already know if you're going to like it going in. It is exactly what it looks like. I'd say watch a few trailers and if they get you hyped up then give the series a try because you'll probably like it. They are bombastic flight action games made by airplane autists with great soundtracks that simulate what people wish air combat was like, and are all greater than the sum of their parts.

I've been playing flight sims since the 90s, used to play War Thunder many years ago, and play (and have spent on) DCS more than I will admit, but Ace Combat fills a totally different niche from those kinds of games. It's not remotely an either-or thing, you can love both of them and I do. There's really nothing like Ace Combat. It's one of those games that basically defines its own genre.
