New England is very different from the Upper Midwest which is very different from the Pacific Northwest etc. Ohio is usually considered part of the Midwest, but has the unique distinction of being part of the Rust Belt (formerly the Iron Belt, which are the states bordering the Great Lakes which once had a booming metal production and manufacturing economy that completely collapsed over the last 50 years, turning most of the metros in the region into dilapidated shitholes) and being on the outskirts of Appalachia, which is where methhead hillbillies roam the hills. It's a meme because it just kinda sucks.
