Obvious way to tell is that it's a sci-fi setting instead of the renaissancepunk of the original. The alt-setting doesn't really have a concept of thread reps or votes (and thus tripfags). If people want to coordinate on stuff obviously that's fine, but there's no canon being "enforced" beside a few ground rules.
