So, this was on my mind for a while, and as I watched Gura's post-live stream, as well as Delta's 2D debut, I felt the need to make this post.
Think about names. We don't choose our birth names, and we don't always like them. But they're not the only names we go by in our lives. We get nicknames from our friends (or enemies), we adopt online handles, come up with pen names and other pseudonyms. And, in a way, the latter are closer to our "true" names, because it's something that comes from within ourselves. However, even those names aren't always a perfect fit, or sometimes we "grow out" of the old ones, and put on a new one, that better reflects our current selves.
And, well, it's not about just the names, but our virtual identities as a whole, our avatars in the digital world. Watching Gura gush over her animated video, I thought that she really found "herself" this time. I don't know how much Hololive talents are involved in the process of designing or at least naming the characters. If at all. But regardless, I felt like Gura really is Gura, first and foremost.
Can the same be said about IRyS? Probably not. Not at the moment. It's evident she's not satisfied with her looks. Neither was I at first, but I grew to love it. But does IRyS think of herself as IRyS? Or does she think of herself as n-word, because it was the first and original, and only hers, not Cover's? Either way, I hope that the redesign will help IRyS to feel like IRyS, to truly be IRyS.
Thanks for reading my blog.
