Here's just a very recent example from Granblue Fantasy where they suddenly started backtracking on new content because oldschool players got mad that it required using limited materials that they already used on older content. Players were pissed all over Twitter and threatening to quit the game entirely after spending thousands of dollars over this minor inconvenience. Getting mad and threatening to take their ball and go home is the Japanese version of cancel culture, and it works.
