I actually did the same as you and told my old boss that I might want to study in the future and instead they offered me a permanent position at the company, but shit happened and I couldn't accept it.
With no connections you're only down to your luck and ability to spot opportunities. Once you get lucky you need to be enthusiastic about it, and only talk about things relevant to the job. Brutal honesty is often a bad thing so lie by omission when necessary. These things might be tough if you're autistic.
