Giving people the ability to become powerful on their own would take away the impact of the trope.
Becoming a catalognaut should be by birth and by chance. The universe does not care whether you are from a poor family or a pious one. You got a gift by chance, suck it up.
As for the Schizo thing, I'm okay with schizo activity being the trigger for the universe to create Catalognauts. Like that anon said, giving the magical side of the setting its own food chain. Like an actual ecosystem where everything has a role and interacts with one another.
