While a lightning strike can be visible for quite while, leave a trail of hot plasma, and illuminate the sky, the sprites are only 5-300 milliseconds long, and they're much dimmer. Plus, the angle to be able to see them is really weird, you need to have a clear line of sight to above a lightning storm cloud, which is pretty uncommon. How much stock would you put into something you thought you saw that lasted for that long, and which no one else in your entire life had ever seen? Imo, some accounts of seeing "angels" might be attributable to red sprites.
