And I'll tell you why - it's because the autists that frequent those boards aren't there. When you talk about anime on /a/ or movies on /tv/ for example it's always a dick measuring contest of taste. You like Cyberpunk? Goyslop. MST3K? Reddit.
For better or worse "casual" fans are often better to discuss hobbies with, because they're less invested and thus less judgemental. Otaku always attach their self worth to their hobbies so they get real judgemental about what they're passionate about.
