I admit I'm always more down for a 'good story/serviceable smut' fic than vice-versa, but again it's always dependant and probably moreso on the author's end than the idea itself as I feel you can tell when a smut fics plot is simple because it's genuinely all that fic needs or because the writer doesn't care. The latter usually giving the fic kind of a trashy feel and I have a very low tolerance for trashiness.
