I usually think about a word, mainly an activity, then I think of scenarios that could happen with that word, just letting my mind wander and picking whatever I find interesting. I guess it's partly thanks to reading so much manga that I can come up with scenarios.
Now with a prompt in mind, I go deeper than that, what could happen that could lead up to the prompt? What kind of interactions would be fitting? I ask myself questions like that to keep my mind thinking and then I write pretty much everything down to make sure I don't forget. Even if I don't use the idea right then I could mix it with something else later.
This is probably kind of confusing since I'm not really good at explaining myself but I hope it helps even a little bit.
