cope mechanism I've seen with drug users in my life. It's always a "well, at least I'm not doing meth" and once they start doing meth it's "well, at least I'm not doing heroin" and then "well, at least I'm not doing subutex". There's always some illusory layer of being worse off that excuses your current destructive habits.
It's a pervasive and insidious way of thinking so I don't know what's the solution other than think, champa, think.
