Years ago I was talking about meta-celebrities and the idea of characters played by actors who were in fact virtual. A friend pointed out that shit like Hatsune Miku already existed and that there were a whole host of other such characters. A year ago VTubers just seemed like a niche thing, then the pandemic hit and a bunch of people I knew got addicted to them. Then I started watching during the VTuber explosion of 2020.
Where does it go from here? We're already seeing indies go corporate. We've got corporations franchising out regionally and linguistically. What's next? This is kind of a /biz/ thread but it's relevant.
