Most of the fun comes from mixing and matching skills until you have the godly unit of yours that you can make solo large chunks of certain maps.
And let's be honest, FEH's story has never been a particular strong suit; at best you have the new Book animations to hype you up for that particular arc, but past that the stories have never been anything to write home about, and I say that as a Day 1 player myself.
