While weapons can be attached to it, it's main use would be protection against whatever an exoplanet can throw against our explorer teams planetside. would protect against massive pressure, heat, cold, acid,... and while normal bullets would just bounce off, cannoballs could still knock out the pilot, and even damage it if they hit a joint or something
