Her early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Noise! came out on '08, I think she really came into her own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. She's been compared to Gawr Gura, but I think Mumei has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
On '15, Mumei released this, Howdy, her most accomplished album. I think her undisputed masterpiece is "Wagon Wheel", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of travel, and the importance of belonging, it's also a personal statement about the owl herself.
