Nowadays you have to walk on eggshell everywhere: online because you get "cancelled", in real life because people have been conditioned to be part of a faction and consider anyone not in their faction as an enemy.
Sure, it's not like it was always roses, but it was a lot less oppressing and if you lived in a place less connected (think small towns) it wasn't even there (at the cost of not having many services, I guess).
