It's not like there's any more variables than in an actual tabletop session, but the outcomes are just too boring.

That last bit is what gets me. It's not like you can reroll another character the way you would in a real tabletop game because I am NOT accounting for the variables involved in character creation. So OK, I write a Bad End and we go back to page 1, but canned Bad Ends (as in binary results of one bad choice) are boring as shit to write and the emotional impact can end up verging on the comical if you abuse them. Like, if you look at most VNs the only Bad Ends people remember are route-defining ones, nobody cares about that one scene where Shirou gets stabbed and dies two pages in because you made the wrong choice.
I feel like I'm going to have to admit defeat and just pare it down to a regular old CYOA but then all my tabletop autism would have been wasted effort.
