No phone, no supervision, no CCTV, a higher than average number of venomous snakes. 9/11 was a catalyst of sorts, but I think the rise of being always-online (and furthermore expected to be constantly available for work and other people) entrenched it. A lot of people shitpost about "back in my day!" but before the millennium turned over, it really was a very different time. Not necessarily a better time, but certainly a different one. Absolutely a quieter one.
