Leftists are trying to culturally appropriate the vocabulary of the South after disparaging it for so long in an attempt to seem folksy. Adding to that, "y'all" doesn't bring to mind any specific sex as opposed to "you guys" which is more common in the Midwest. There's also a bit from an Australian comedienne praising "y'all" for being extremely inclusive, but I can't find it.
