But the thing with CRPGs is that if they rely heavily on the plot and characters, so if those don't click there's not much to do. I tried BG3 a while ago, and only finished the first act before dropping it.

Honestly, one of the things I liked about VTMB is that it experimented with mixing classic RPG mechanics with more dynamic gameplay, even if it didn't quite work very well. The appeal of RPGs in my opinion is the freedom and not the math homework gameplay.
Old tabletop RPGs probably came up with that sort of combat because there's not much else you can do with pen and paper, so I think it's pretty dumb how so many CRPGs try to copy it 1:1 when modern technology and the medium gives them the creative freedom to make pretty much any sort of gameplay they want.
