The VN is pretty clear about this and Shirou repeatedly expresses how he is only able to press any sort of advantage because Gil never took the fight seriously.

>Rho Aias which Archer helped buff which surprised Gil>Shirou Does the chant which surprises Gil some random ass highschooler is able to use a reality marble>Shirou the runs at Gil autistically screeching while the swords contained in UBW are swirling around causing havoc and preventing Gates of Babylon from being used>Shirou knows Gil will rape him if he summons Ea so his entire strategy is preventing that from happening>Shirou and Gil are on equal footing since neither are masters of the weapons they are using and again Shirou is charging at him and swinging swords like a psycho also everytime their swords clash they break forcing >Shirou also has a speed buff since the swords are already present while Gil is forced to summon each sword>this ends with Gil getting his arm chopped off as he goes to summon Ea which has a longer summon time>After the fight Angry Manjew starts eating Gil>Gil is fucking pissed and tries to drag Shirou is>while he is distracted Archer shoots him in the head
